The Indian Space program, spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organization, or ISRO for short, has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last decade.

With so many satellite launches, accompanied with lunar and mars missions - Chandrayaan & Mangalyaan, ISRO has proved India's prowess when it comes to space technology.

And now ISRO is ready with its latest lunar mission - Chandrayaan 2!

Lunar mission cheaper than Movie Interstellar

As always, the new mission is one of the cheapest such missions in the whole world.

It has a budget of ₹ 800 crore.

This is even less than what the Hollywood Movie Interstellar costed to make. Interstellar was made at an approximate budget of ₹ 1062 crores.

ISRO has always been very cost efficient with its space missions. Even its Mars mission, launched 5 years back in 2013, costed only ₹ 470 crores.

At that time, it was less than the budget of the Oscar nominated Hollywood movie Gravity.

Aim of Chandrayaan 2

Unlike chandrayaan 1 mission, which was just a moon orbiter with a landing probe, chandrayaan 2 will have an orbiter, a lander and a rover.

It will attempt to land a lander and a rover on the south pole of the moon.

According to ISRO, this mission will use and test various new technologies and conduct new experiments.

The wheeled rover will move on the lunar surface and will perform on-site chemical analysis.

The data will be relayed to Earth through the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, which will piggyback on the same launch

Chandrayaan 2 will be launched in October 2018.
