Dengue Fever Symptoms

Dengue is caused by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. This mosquito has black and white stripes on its body as shown in the dengue mosquito image below.

Dengue fever, unlike common perception, is very much treatable!
In fact, in many cases, the patient need not even get admitted to a hospital. However, the disease needs to be diagnosed early to start proper treatment, else it can turn fatal leading to the death of the patient.
There are a few common dengue fever symptoms that are faced by the patients. They are listed below.
  • High Fever
  • A headache
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle and Joint Pain
  • Skin Rashes
Although having these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean the patient is suffering from dengue, one should still take them seriously and get the patient tested for the disease. The tests can confirm whether the patient is suffering from dengue or not.

If the tests are positive, which can be the case in most scenarios, the disease is successfully diagnosed early and treatment can begin.
If the above symptoms are overlooked, the disease develops into a more serious form of Dengue, where the symptoms are:

  1. Bleeding
  2. Low levels of blood platelets
  3. Blood plasma leakage
  4. Low blood pressure.

Dengue Fever Prevention

Since dengue is caused by a virus which spreads through mosquitoes, the best way to prevent the disease is to avoid contact with mosquitoes.

Common dengue fever prevention ways are:
  • Keep your house clean and tidy.
  • Do not leave stagnant water lying anywhere in or around the house. It’s very dangerous as these misquotes are born in such stagnant water only.

  • During the rains, the chances of you getting infected by the Dengue/ mosquito are extremely high due to the level of stagnant freshwater increase; at this point, all measures of safety should be used.
  • Keep Water Coolers clean. If you can’t clean stagnant water, add oil to it to prevent mosquitoes from breeding there.
  • Try to wear clothes that don’t leave any skin areas exposed.
  • Wear a mosquito repellent cream and carry it with you at all times.
  • Keep the doors and windows of the house closed, mostly early in the morning and during the evening. This is the time when mosquitoes try to enter your house.
  • Use mosquito nets while sleeping to prevent mosquitoes from biting you.
  • Take extra care of children and the elderly.
  • Get you locality fogged frequently to kill any existing mosquitoes. Ask you locality head/director to get the fogging done every week or two.

Dengue Fever Treatment

If you or someone in your family has contracted dengue, keep a few things in mind and everything will be alright.
  • There is no need to panic.
  • The dengue patient will be suffering from very high fever (one of the symptoms). This happens because the body is trying to fight the virus by raising the body temperature. But such high temperature can damage other body parts. So, we need to continuously monitor the temperature using a thermometer and apply cold water bandages to the forehead and arms to cool the body down.
  • The patient may feel body ache but do not give him Combiflame medicine. Use only fever-reducing(anti-pyretic) medicine such as paracetamol. Always consult the doctor and follow his prescription when giving medicines.
  • Keep giving the patient fluids to drink. These can be either lemon water, Glucon-D or coconut water. From my personal experience, I have found coconut water to be very helpful during dengue. Remember, the patient needs to consume lots of water. This helps in keeping the body temperature down and also flushes out the toxins produced by the dengue virus.
  • You can also take Patanjali Giloy tablets (not sponsored by Patanjali) as well. Giloy is an Ayurvedic herb that has fever-reducing(anti-pyretic) properties, increases blood platelets and also strengthens body immunity.
  • If the condition of the patient does not improve in 2-3 days and stays the same, or gets worse, immediately take him/her to the hospital.
