Children's Day - When and Why is it celebrated? | India

It's not as if children are only loved and celebrated on a single day, but it has been decided worldwide by all countries to dedicate a day specially to children.

However, all countries don't celebrate Children's Day on the same date!

In most countries of the world (around 50), Children's Day is celebrated on 1st June. Though Universal Children's Day is celebrated on 20th November.

In India, as most of us would know, Children's Day is celebrated on 14th November.

Children's Day in India - Significance

As I have already shared above that Children's Day is celebrated on the 14th of November, every year, in India.

I have also shared the fact that different countries have different dates for celebrating this Day and that the Universal date for children's day has been decided as 20th November.

So why do we celebrate Children's Day on 14th November in India?

14th November marks the birth Anniversary of Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. He was a freedom fighter in India's struggle for Independence and also the first Prime Minister of Independent India.

It is said, that Shri Jawaharlal Nehru loved children. He used to interact with children a lot. He believed they were the future of a new and developed India.

Hence, 14th November is celebrated as Children's Day in India. This way, we all celebrate children as well as the birth anniversary of our first Prime Minister.

How to celebrate Children's Day?

Well, there is no set rule or way to celebrate this day.

Mostly, there are cultural programs and events in schools. Students enjoy with their parents and teachers. You, personally, can take your children out on a picnic, a movie or out for lunch to their favourite restaurant.

Children's Day in India - how to celebrate

The best way to celebrate children's day if you are a parent, in my opinion, is to spend time with your children. Understand them better, talk to them to see if they are happy with everything. Inspire them to do the right thing and live a righteous life. After all, they are the future!

And if you are not a parent yet, visit a children's home for the underprivileged and spend time with them. Give them presents, play with them. Even if only for a day, bring happiness to their lives with your presence.

And if you can, start supporting the studies of an underprivileged child. Give him/her the opportunity to be able to create his/her bright future.

That's what is the true essence of Children's day!
