Thugs of Hindostan - What Bollywood needs to learn from this Disaster!

A week after the release of the Huge Bollywood Movie - Thugs of Hindostan, it is very clear now that this movie is a humongous disaster. I had already predicted, based on its trailer, that this movie could be the biggest Flop of 2018 and it has happened. You can read that article in the link provided.

What's most surprising to me is the fact that Aamir Khan, as big of a perfectionist as he is, didn't pay attention to the story of the film.
Thugs of Hindostan - What Bollywood needs to learn from this Disaster!

We all are aware of how particular Aamir Khan is about the film's story and his character. He makes sure everything is perfect and only then does he sign a film. Yet he couldn't pre-empt this disaster of a story before signing the film.

Before Thugs of Hindostan, Vijay Krishna Acharya had directed him in Dhoom 3 as well which was panned by critics and audience. Still, Aamir Khan agreed to work with him again!

However, that is a topic of some other discussion. In this post, I want to discuss things Bollywood should learn from the Failure of Thugs of Hindostan.

What Bollywood needs to learn from the Failure of Thugs of Hindostan

Content is the King

If the movies of 2018 have taught us anything, then its the fact that a small budget movie with amazing content can be very successful at the box office.

Movies like Raazi, Stree, Andhadhun, Sui Dhaga, Badhai Ho were all made at a very small budget but had a great story at the core. This was backed by amazing performances which made these movies an instant hit with the masses.

All these movies made more than 100 crores and had a lot of repeat value in them.

On the contrary, mindless masala films like Race 3, Jab Harry Met Sejal and Thugs of Hindostan have failed to connect with the Indian audience and crashed within a week.

SuperStars Don't Matter as much anymore!

Now, when I say that Superstars don't matter, I don't mean to disregard the fan following of any Bollywood superstar.

What I actually mean to say is that A superstar can only bring the audience to the theatre in bulk on the first weekend. After that, it's up to the film itself to earn.

Thugs of Hindostan had 2 of the biggest superstars on the Bollywood Film Industry. It got the benefit of that by earning 50 crores on the first day. But crashed soon after.

Be More Creative

The rejection of Thugs of Hindostan clearly has shown that the Indian audience has grown with respect to their movie tastes. They no longer appreciate just about anything.

The makers of Thugs of Hindostan thought they could sell India's 2 of the biggest superstars in a visual effect filled movie and earn huge profits.

However, they were wronged by the Indian Audience!

They may have been inspired by the Baahubali movie series, but what the makers of Thugs of Hindustan failed to realise is that Baahubali worked not because of its effects but because of its story.

It's so disappointing to see the same old stories getting repeated in Bollywood.

South Indian Movies, Bengali Movies, even other regional movies are much more creative than Bollywood at this point in time.

Stop adding item numbers and Rap Songs to every film

I personally find these very irritating.

Everything that becomes successful in a film becomes a must have in every other movie that follows. Item Songs and Raps from Baadshah/Honey Singh are such a nuisance.

They grew in popularity from some movies, where they were novel ideas and worked in the context of the film.

However, since then, every film has these for no rhyme or reason!

Movie makers need to understand whether or not their film needs such songs or not. Why does a movie like Thugs of Hindostan need 2-3 item songs of Katrina Kaif?

I am still relieved with the fact that they didn't add Baadshah's Rap in between those songs.

Imagine Katrina and Aamir dancing and suddenly an English officer starts rapping! It would have been atrocious. But I know our Bollywood movie makers are more than capable of doing this. In fact, I am quite certain this would have been a topic of discussion while working on the film. Thankfully, better sense prevailed.

Final Thoughts

Bollywood movies have slowly lost their mojo over the year.

Sometimes, in between, a few movies come which reinstate our faith that Bollywood is capable of creating good content. However, many writer-directors, who used to create amazing content, have fallen prey to masala films and ruined their fan base.

Take for example Imtiaz Ali or even Anurag Kashyap!

They started off so well and showed so much potential. But all they deliver now is crap like Jab Harry met Sejal and Manmarziyan.

Bollywood needs to understand that even the Indian masses have grown up now and will no longer tolerate silly mindless crap. Film Makers need to pull up their socks.

Do you agree?
